2018: Recounting the ‘Disaster of the Century’ as India Picks Survival Drama for Oscars

India has nominated the Malayalam film 2018 (2022), based on the devastating Kerala floods of 2018, as its official entry for the 2024 Academy Awards in the Best International Feature Film category.

The survival drama depicts the catastrophic impact of the worst floods to hit the state in nearly a century, which left over 500 dead and displaced thousands. As the movie prepares to take the global stage, it shines a spotlight on the sheer intensity of the natural disaster.

Torrential Rains Wreak Havoc

The Southwest Monsoon arrived in Kerala in 2018 with a fury, bringing rainfall 42% above normal from June 1 to August 19. The downpour led to severe flooding across 13 of the state’s 14 districts.

According to reports, Kerala received 2,346.6 mm of rain during this period, far exceeding the expected 1,649.5 mm. The resulting floods were declared a ‘calamity of severe nature’ by the Centre.

With 35 out of 54 dams opened for the first time ever, swollen rivers like Periyar, Bharathapuzha and Pamba breached their banks. Landslides were also reported in hilly districts of Wayanad and Idukki.

Recurring Pattern of Destruction

While the scale of devastation in 2018 was immense, Kerala has historically been vulnerable to flooding.

Back in 1924, the state saw heavy loss of life and property due to unusual rains. In 1961 as well, above-normal showers led to widespread damage in the Periyar sub-basin.

Experts point to multiple factors like unplanned urbanization, ill-equipped dams and land misuse exacerbating the impact of extreme weather events.

Key Takeaways for Disaster Management

The Kerala deluge highlighted the need for climate-resilient infrastructure and responsible development.

As per a report by the National Institute of Disaster Management, uncontrolled sand mining and construction on unstable hills worsened the effects of heavy rains.

Better co-ordination between agencies involved in damage assessment was also advised for streamlined disaster response and recovery.

2018: Capturing Kerala’s Collective Trauma

The Malayalam film provides a realistic portrayal of the 2018 calamity and its aftermath. From capturing the panic-stricken evacuation of families to showcasing the valiant efforts of fishermen rescuers, the movie depicts the trauma as well as the compassion witnessed during the floods.

Given its strong social message and critical acclaim, 2018 is a worthy choice to represent India on the global stage. The Oscars nomination will also turn the spotlight on a disaster that united the people of Kerala in their resolve to rebuild their beautiful state.
