Ramayana Part One Trailer Sparks Debate: Ranbir Kapoor’s Lord Ram Divides Fans

The first full trailer for Ramayana: Part One has landed — and Bollywood hasn’t stopped talking about it since. Within 48 hours of release, the trailer had racked up more than 350 million views across official platforms, making it one of the most-watched Indian film trailers in recent memory. But the reaction online has been anything but unanimous.

What’s In the Trailer

Directed by Nitesh Tiwari and produced by Namit Malhotra through Prime Focus Studios, DNEG, and Monster Mind Creations, Ramayana is a two-part, IMAX-shot adaptation of Valmiki’s ancient epic. The trailer was unveiled during Brahma Muhurat, timed deliberately for its spiritual significance.

It opens with Yash’s Ravana arriving at a grand palace to declare “Ravana Raaj,” before shifting into Rama’s exile alongside his brother Lakshman, played by Ravi Dubey. Viewers get glimpses of Ranbir Kapoor’s Rama in multiple phases — regal and flower-showered in one frame, dressed in simple bark clothing (valkal) in another — building toward the moment that sets the entire saga in motion: Sita’s abduction.

The ensemble cast is stacked. Sai Pallavi plays Sita, Sunny Deol takes on Hanuman, Lara Dutta plays Kaikeyi, Kajal Aggarwal is Mandodari, and the trailer also introduces Vivek Oberoi, Rakul Preet Singh, Shobana, Sheeba Chaddha, and Saurabh Sachdeva in supporting mythological roles. The score comes from a rare pairing of Hans Zimmer and A.R. Rahman.

Ramayana: Part One is set for a global Diwali release on November 8, 2026, with Part Two following at Diwali 2027.

Why Fans Are Split

The trailer’s biggest talking point has been Ranbir Kapoor’s portrayal of Lord Ram. Some viewers have praised his restrained, calm performance as true to the character’s spirit, arguing that Ram’s strength was always in his composure rather than aggression. Others weren’t convinced, criticizing his dialogue delivery and saying it felt more suited to his earlier, more contemporary roles.

Yash’s Ravana, by contrast, has drawn far more consistent praise. Fans singled out a sequence between Ravana and Jatayu as a standout, calling it goosebump-inducing and cinematic. Several viewers also noted that the trailer leans heavily into Ravana’s presence, joking that Rama felt like a supporting character in his own story — and many pointed out that Sunny Deol’s Hanuman was notably absent from the footage altogether, a choice that left some fans disappointed.

Sai Pallavi’s look as Sita has also come under scrutiny, with some viewers debating how closely her styling aligns with traditional depictions of the character.

The Bigger Picture

Beyond the trailer itself, Ramayana has been generating headlines for months — from its casting announcements to a reported music rights deal worth tens of millions of dollars with T-Series, to Ranbir Kapoor and Yash’s appearance at San Diego Comic-Con as part of the film’s global promotional push. The project has already been named among IMDb’s most-anticipated upcoming films.

With a budget to match its ambition and a marketing campaign built for a worldwide audience, Ramayana: Part One now carries the weight of turning viral buzz into box office results when it opens this Diwali.
