Days after Income Tax Department searches at properties linked to her extended family made headlines, Rakul Preet Singh has issued a detailed public statement addressing the coverage directly. Posted to her Instagram, the actress pushed back firmly against what she described as inaccurate and sensationalized reporting, and asked for the record to be set straight.
Her Central Claim: She Wasn’t the Target
The most significant line in Rakul’s statement cuts straight to the heart of the story that’s circulated since the searches took place. “The search was not pertaining to me,” she wrote, directly disputing the framing used across much of the coverage that named her alongside the properties searched.
She went further, laying out her own background and financial conduct in detail. She described coming from an Armed Forces family, stating she had no industry godfather and built her career entirely through hard work. She said she has been paying taxes responsibly since the age of 20, and stated plainly that she is not involved in any illegal foreign remittance, whether personally or on behalf of any production house. She also addressed property ownership directly, denying holding any benami property on anyone’s behalf, in India or abroad, and stating that she has never accepted property as a gift and does not do so as a matter of principle.

A Pointed Message to Media Outlets
Beyond the denial itself, Rakul used the statement to call out what she sees as a broader problem in how the story was covered. She said it was heartbreaking to see a growing trend among self-styled online reporters and some mainstream journalists to sensationalize news without verifying facts first.
She urged outlets that published what she called false, malicious, and speculative reports to retract them and correct the record. She also acknowledged the commercial pressures every media business faces, but was firm that those pressures shouldn’t come at the cost of accuracy, or at the cost of someone’s reputation and livelihood.
Why This Response Matters
Public statements like this one serve an important function beyond simply disputing coverage. When searches involve public figures, it’s common for reporting to link anyone connected to the properties or individuals named, sometimes without clearly distinguishing between the actual subject of an investigation and people merely associated with them through family or business ties.
