Gaslight: Sara Ali Khan’s Whodunit Turn out to be a Dull Thriller

Gaslight invests more in the atmosphere than substance and entices attention with its context and dramatic twists; however, Sara Ali Khan’s whodunit turns out to be a dull thriller rather than the intriguing one. The film starring Sara Ali Khan, Vikrant Massey, Chitrangda Singh, and Rahul Dev checks attempts to be a good thriller but an important concern with Gaslight is that the thriller’s big reveal is apparent from a mile away. When it is finally revealed to the viewer, it doesn’t show up as a surprise.

Gaslight Review

The plot of the film is a traditional murder mystery. The movie was filmed at the Wankaner Palace in Gujarat, and the long corridors and cavernous spaces add to the haunting environment. It resembles a Fear Files show more than a Kripalani film in a large segment. Even the last ten minutes provide some redemption, but it comes at the expense of investing two hours. ‘Gaslight’ has a slow tempo and a gloomy screenplay. DOP Rahul Dharuman works diligently to ensure the visual elements work, but he is constrained. The music is used to entice spooks but is more irksome than frightening.

Gaslight Star Cast & Performances

Sara has a lovely face but isn’t versatile enough to articulate some intense emotions. She evokes one note in a role that needs her to be both confident and susceptible. Vikrant Massey is a renowned actor who has gained popularity through his skill and hard work. His switchover is so flawless that you won’t even notice it. Akshay Oberoi portrays a stereotypical ‘wealth fascinated’ individual with no variety. The most complex character belongs to Chitrangada Singh, who plays her part sincerely even though some scenes require finer execution. Rahul Dev had too little to offer, but he did his job well.

Gaslight Selling Point

Gaslight is a decent selection if you want to involve in some level-one mind games. The atmosphere is menacing and perfect, and unlike many Indian thrillers, fear is not frenzied but secluded. The movie probably has every visual which is required for a thriller. ‘Gaslight’ is good enough to watch if you want to enjoy a stellar ensemble. Sara Ali Khan, Vikrant Massey, and Chitrangada Singh should be applauded for their attempts.

Gaslight Low Point

Pavan Kirpalani is better remembered for his prowess in the psycho-thriller genre. Gaslight may not be considered one of his finest works, but we must credit him for attempting to pull off such a tricky genre as this one.

The plot isn’t intriguing or terrifying. It doesn’t try to match or exceed its audience, instead running along formulaic lines. The climactic twist also has no effect. It is a victim of handy writing. The climax comes as a letdown.
