Mrs Undercover Review: Radhika Apte’s Spy Comedy Collapses Badly

Mrs Undercover, helmed by Anushree Mehta and featuring Radhika Apte in the title role, is the most recent entry into the spy genre. It could have differentiated itself from the other spy thriller by having a feel-good humor-infused plot. But sadly, Radhika Apte’s spy comedy collapses badly; the screenplay’s flaws are so apparent that the plot’s twist is long since anticipated. Let’s get into Mrs Undercover’s detailed review:

Former special force agent Durga struggles to move on with her daily life and mission, but she manages to do so. But will she be able to track down this mysterious killer who plans a bloodbath for the climax?

Mrs Undercover Review

The film’s premise is in a single line – a housewife who joins a spy world. At first glance, this may appear to be a spin-off of Manoj Bajpayee’s highly successful series, The Family Man. Durga, like Shrikant Tiwari, travels two worlds: family and spy. However, it is the handling of Mrs Undercover that leads it to land flat. Mrs Undercover misses the local flavor and feel of ZEE5’s previous Kolkata-themed crime capers, Bob Biswas and Lost.

The always captivating Radhika Apte is wasted in a portrayal packed with tone-deaf characterization that it’s hard to take her literally. Sumit Vyas’ character can turn extremely horrifying, but the writing fails him. Both Saheb Chattopadhyay and Rajesh Sharma are fantastic, as always. The character of Laboni Sarkar is underdeveloped and has no room to flourish.

Mrs Undercover Selling Point

The only amusing parts of Mrs. Undercover are when Rangeela, masking himself as a priest, rickshaw puller, or fish seller, tries to convince Durga to sign on with the mission. Writer and producer Anushree emphasizes that ‘Homemakers are the real change maker of the society’ throughout the movie. Radhika Apte, who appeared to be fighting against all odds and rising above its merits, is perhaps one of the only reasons you can watch this movie.

Mrs Undercover Low Point

The fact that its plot is infused with feel-good humor could have distinguished it from other espionage thrillers. Unfortunately, it doesn’t land well and fizzles out too quickly. The script has plenty of loopholes, which shows an absence of understanding of thrillers as a genre. Mrs Undercover’s shoddy editing and unappealing neon-lit set design jump from one tone-deaf explanation to another. The film’s setting and overall backdrop lack personality and intrigue.
