R Madhavan Appointed as New FTII President

In a new development, acclaimed actor R Madhavan has been appointed as the new President of the prestigious Film and Television Institute of India (FTII). This announcement was made by the Union Minister of Information and Broadcasting, Anurag Thakur, on Friday evening.

Madhavan will now be succeeding former filmmaker Shekhar Kapur as the head of the institute. Located in Pune, FTII is an autonomous institute under the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting of the Government of India. Known for producing some of the finest talent in Indian cinema over the years, the institute offers courses in disciplines like direction, cinematography, editing, art direction etc.

Reaction to the Appointment

Both Anurag Thakur and R Madhavan expressed their delight over the new appointment. Thakur congratulated Madhavan on X and said he is confident that the actor’s experience and strong ethics will enrich FTII and take it to greater heights.

Madhavan responded by thanking the Minister for the opportunity. He added that he will try his best to live up to the expectations from this prestigious role.

Background of R Madhavan’s Prolific Career

R Madhavan, 52, made his acting debut in 2000 with Mani Ratnam’s romantic drama ‘Alaipayuthey’. This was followed by a successful stint in Hindi films starting with ‘Rehna Hai Tere Dil Mein’ in 2001.

Apart from acting, Madhavan also directed, produced and acted in the 2022 biopic ‘Rocketry: The Nambi Effect’. Based on the life of ISRO scientist Nambi Narayanan, the film won widespread acclaim including the National Award for Best Feature Film this year.

With such a strong body of work spanning over two decades, Madhavan’s appointment as FTII President is being seen as a positive step. His experience and passion for cinema is expected to bring in fresh perspective to the institute.

The actor now has big shoes to fill as FTII has been headed by stalwarts like Girish Karnad, Shyam Benegal and Mahesh Bhatt in the past. Here’s hoping Madhavan’s tenure proves to be a successful one.
