Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani Review: Ranveer and Alia’s Family Drama, Appears Forced and Loud

Recently, the film “Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani” was released, marking the comeback of director Karan Johar in his 25th year in the industry. The movie features Alia Bhatt and Ranveer Singh, seasoned actors like Dharmendra, Jaya Bachchan, and Shabana Azmi. However, Ranveer and Alia’s family drama appears forced and loud and lacks charm. The film could have been shorter by 15-20 minutes, but it’s understandable since there was much material to cover. Let’s scroll out for detailed review:

Storyline

The film opens with Rocky (Ranveer Singh) and Rani (Alia Bhatt), hailing from contrasting families, trying to reunite with their grandparents who had a past love affair. They swap households for three months to convince their families to accept their relationship. This decision leads to a rollercoaster of challenges, self-discovery, and regrets.

Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani Review

The story centers around the clashing families of Randhawas and Chatterjees, following Rocky and Rani’s journey filled with ups and downs, hardships, and regrets. The movie, co-written by Ishita Moitra, Shashank Khaitan, and Sumit Roy, contains several weird dialogues and innuendos that appear contrived and unimpressive. Compared to KJo’s earlier movies, the film lacks the same charm and has unnecessary vulgarity, making it an elongated and tedious watch. The first half, mainly, is slow and uninteresting.

The songs lack substance beyond their catchy hooks, and even the signature song, “Tum Kya Miley,” falls short of the standards set by Pritam, Amitabh Bhattacharya, and Karan Johar.

Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani Star Cast and Performances

Alia Bhatt shines as a confident girl who fearlessly embraces her beliefs and confronts imperfections in herself and others, making her a show stealer. Ranveer impresses as the flamboyant Punjabi ‘Karol Bagh Ka Launda’ with effortless acting. On the other hand, Dharmendra’s captivating performance and the exceptional supporting cast, including Jaya Bachchan as the feisty grandmother and Shabana Azmi as the tender-hearted granny, make the film bearable.

Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani’s Selling Point

Ranveer and Alia deliver compelling performances, especially in emotionally charged scenes, effectively portraying the reality of altercations in educated families. Little to complain about the ensemble cast’s performance truly saves the film’s grace. However, this Bollywood family entertainer combines Ranveer’s craziness with KJo’s eccentricity, making it a one-time watch.

Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani’s Weak Point

Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani boldly addresses subversive topics like male Kathak dancers and lingerie stores but ultimately falls short as a shallow family drama using outdated methods to convey modern love, loyalty, and communication themes.

The film is filled with continuous preaching sessions that extensively focus on criticizing patriarchy, denouncing misogyny, and emphasizing feminism, which can be unsettling for some viewers.
