Everything began when the child of the Indian couple Anurup and Sagarika Bhattacharya was taken into custody by Norway’s child welfare authority. The Heart-Wrenching Real Story behind Mrs. Chatterjee Vs Norway
Anurup and Sagarika Bhattacharya, an Indian couple, relocated to Norway in 2007. Shortly after they relocated, they had their first child, Avigyan (son). Aishwarya, their daughter, was born the following year. Avigyan was placed in a kindergarten near the family’s home after developing ‘autism-like’ symptoms.
The couple’s kids were taken away by authorities in May 2011, citing poor parenting. Sagarika used to hand-feed the baby, but the Child Welfare Committee in Norway attributed it to force-feeding. They also mentioned that children should not sleep with their parents. Charges against the parents comprised a single slap by the mother, Sagarika Bhattacharya. They also claimed that the children did not have sufficient space to play. They were also accused of giving their children “inadequate” clothing and toys.
The parents requested assistance from the foreign ministry to intervene in the case. The Indian government strongly criticized Norway’s Child Welfare Service for separating kids from their parents. By then, Sagarika and Anurup’s marriage had hit a rough patch, and they split later; Sagarika fought for children’s custody and obtained the same.
Mrs. Chatterjee Vs Norway will debut in theatres on March 17.
