The Untold Story Behind SRK’s Pre-Fame Photos
In a nostalgic glimpse into Bollywood history, actor Amar Talwar recently shared a collection of never-before-seen black and white photographs featuring Shah Rukh Khan from his early theater days. These rare images, dating back to around 1990, capture a young, aspiring actor just before his legendary journey to Mumbai that would forever change Indian cinema.
The photographs show a fresh-faced Shah Rukh, smiling casually, holding a vintage camera, and in one particularly touching image, cradling Talwar’s young son Manoj (now known professionally as DJ Tally). What makes these images particularly significant is their timing—they were taken just before SRK departed Delhi for Mumbai to pursue his Bollywood dreams.

Before becoming the “King Khan” beloved by millions worldwide, Shah Rukh honed his acting skills under the mentorship of theater director Barry John in the renowned Theatre Action Group (TAG) in Delhi. Talwar, who shared these precious memories, was not just a photographer but a fellow actor who performed alongside SRK in multiple TAG productions.
“Shahrukh and I had acted in a couple of TAG plays together – ‘Rough Crossing’ and ‘Who’s Life Is It Anyway,'” Talwar revealed in his social media post. Their theatrical journey nearly continued with a third production called “Lend Me A Tenor,” where an interesting twist of fate occurred.
According to Talwar, “In a third play, ‘Lend Me A Tenor,’ Barry cast me in the role he wanted Shahrukh to play, but by then Shahrukh had left for Mumbai, Bollywood…and the rest is history – I guess!”
