Unsung Tales of Dadasaheb Phalke – The Father of Indian Cinema

Dadasaheb Phalke, the pioneer of Indian cinema, faced numerous challenges while making the country’s first full-length feature film, ‘Raja Harishchandra,’ in 1913. With no prior knowledge of filmmaking and limited resources, Phalke’s journey to bring his vision to life was riddled with obstacles.

Mortgaging His Life Insurance Policy and Selling Wife’s Jewelry

Lacking financial support, Phalke had to mortgage his life insurance policy worth ₹12,000 to secure a loan of ₹10,000. Additionally, his wife, Saraswatibai, sold her jewelry to contribute funds for the film’s production, which cost around ₹15,000 at the time.

The Quest for Actresses and a Visit to the Red-Light District

In a time when women rarely acted in films, Phalke faced the daunting task of finding suitable actresses for his project. His search led him to the unconventional step of visiting a red-light district, hoping to find women willing to act. However, his efforts proved futile, and he eventually cast a young woman he encountered at a hotel while dejected.

Breaking Stereotypes and Paving the Way

Despite the challenges, Phalke’s determination and ingenuity resulted in the successful release of ‘Raja Harishchandra’ on May 3, 1913, at the Coronation Cinema in Mumbai. The silent film not only broke stereotypes but also paved the way for the Indian film industry, earning Phalke the well-deserved title of “Father of Indian Cinema.”

Honoring a Legacy – The Dadasaheb Phalke Award

In recognition of his pioneering contributions, the Indian government instituted the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 1969, the highest official honor bestowed upon film personalities in the country. This award serves as a lasting tribute to the man who laid the foundation for Indian cinema and overcame numerous obstacles to bring his dream to life.
