Ishaan Khatter Leads Indian Soldiers in New War Film ‘Pippa’

A new Indian war film titled ‘Pippa’ tells the story of the Indo-Pakistan war of 1971 from the perspective of an Indian army tank squadron. The film’s trailer was unveiled this week by Prime Video, which will premiere the movie on its platform on November 10.

Plot Follows Real-Life Battle

‘Pippa’ follows Captain Balram Mehta of the 45th Cavalry tank squadron, played by actor Ishaan Khatter. The character is based on real-life Brigadier Balram Singh Mehta, who commanded a tank squadron during the Battle of Garibpur on India’s eastern front in 1971.

The battle was a key moment in the war which led to the liberation of Bangladesh from Pakistan. When the 45th Cavalry’s commander was killed in action, Captain Mehta took charge and led the squadron to victory.

Film Title References Famous War Tank

The film’s title refers to the PT-76 tank used by the Indian army, which was nicknamed ‘Pippa’ due to its amphibious capabilities. With India’s support, the ‘Pippa’ tanks were able to decisively defeat the Pakistani army’s American-made M24 Chaffee tanks in the Battle of Garibpur.

In addition to Ishaan Khatter, ‘Pippa’ also stars Mrunal Thakur, Priyanshu Painyuli and Soni Razdan. Backed by acclaimed production houses RSVP and Roy Kapur Films, the film is directed by Raja Krishna Menon.

Trailer Shows Intense War Action

The trailer depicts the 45th Cavalry in intense battle sequences, underscored by patriotic dialogues about fighting for the nation. It begins with former Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi declaring war on Pakistan in 1971 after failed diplomatic efforts.

Real wartime footage is blended with scenes of Ishaan as Captain Mehta leading his troops into combat. The soldiers are shown bravely facing enemy fire as they advance into enemy territory with the PT-76 tanks.

Focuses on Indo-Pak War’s Eastern Front

Unlike most Indian war films which have focused on the western front with Pakistan, ‘Pippa’ shines light on the crucial but often overlooked eastern front battle in present-day Bangladesh.

The film promises to highlight the contributions and heroics of Indian armed forces whose actions were pivotal to Bangladesh gaining independence from Pakistan.

Based on first-hand account ‘The Burning Chaffees’ authored by the real Brigadier Mehta, ‘Pippa’ aims to dramatize a relatively unknown chapter of the 1971 war. Its direct-to-streaming release on Prime Video will make this important historical story accessible to viewers worldwide.

Film Pays Tribute to Armed Forces’ Valor

Director Raja Krishna Menon has stated that ‘Pippa’ is intended as a tribute to the courage and sacrifice of Indian armed forces personnel whose efforts shaped history.

He said the film’s goal is to bring this lesser-known story of triumph from India’s past to wider public knowledge, in honor of the heroes who fought for the nation.

Producer Ronnie Screwvala also commented that ‘Pippa’ holds special significance as a salute to the brave hearts whose selfless service and patriotism keep India strong. He expressed pride in being able to narrate this true story on screen.

Talented Cast Brings History to Life

The film’s leading man Ishaan Khatter has proved his acting chops in acclaimed projects like ‘A Suitable Boy’. He is joined by Mrunal Thakur known for ‘Sita Ramam’, and ‘Mirzapur’ actor Priyanshu Painyuli.

Veteran actress Soni Razdan plays a key supporting role. Together the cast helps bring alive the characters who participated in a long-forgotten battle that safeguarded India’s national interests.
