Batwara 1947: Everything We Know About Sunny Deol and Preity Zinta’s Partition Drama

Bollywood’s biggest reunion of the year is almost here. Sunny Deol and Preity Zinta are back on screen together for the first time as co-leads in over two decades, and this time they’re carrying one of the most emotionally loaded stories Hindi cinema can tell: the Partition of India.

Here’s everything we know about Batwara 1947 ahead of its release.

When and Where it’s Releasing

Batwara 1947 hits theatres worldwide on August 14, 2026 — timed deliberately, just a day ahead of India’s Independence Day. It’s shaping up to be one of the most anticipated Hindi releases of the year, arriving in a packed August lineup alongside several other big-ticket films.

The Story

Set during the 1947 Partition, the film follows a husband and wife — played by Sunny Deol and Preity Zinta — whose lives are upended when the country is divided. What starts as a moment of celebration, India’s independence, quickly turns to heartbreak as the family is forced to leave their home and cross into Pakistan. As violence spreads around them, Deol’s character fights to protect his family while trying to hold on to his humanity in the middle of chaos.

The film is based on Asghar Wajahat’s acclaimed play Jis Lahore Nai Vekhya O Jamya E Nai, and was originally titled Lahore 1947 before the makers renamed it, reportedly to sidestep any geopolitical sensitivities around the original title.

At its core, though, the makers have been clear that this isn’t just a story about loss — it’s about choosing kindness over hatred, even when everything around you is falling apart.

The Reunion Everyone’s Talking About

Sunny Deol and Preity Zinta are stepping into lead roles together for the first time in 23 years. Fans will remember their chemistry from Farz (2001) and The Hero: Love Story of a Spy (2003) — they did briefly share screen time in Bhaiaji Superhit (2018), but this is their first major pairing as co-leads since then. For a lot of longtime Bollywood fans, that alone is reason enough to be excited.

Who Else is in it

The film has a genuinely stacked ensemble cast:

  • Sunny Deol as Sikander Mirza
  • Preity Zinta as Hamida Mirza
  • Shabana Azmi as Mai
  • Karan Deol as Javed Mirza
  • Ali Fazal
  • Abhimanyu Singh

Behind the Camera

This is a genuine powerhouse crew. Rajkumar Santoshi directs and wrote the screenplay, working from Asghar Wajahat’s original story. Aamir Khan produces under Aamir Khan Productions, alongside Aparna Purohit. Music is composed by A.R. Rahman, with lyrics by Javed Akhtar — a pairing that alone has fans expecting an emotionally heavy soundtrack. Cinematography comes courtesy of Santosh Sivan, known for his visually striking period work.

The Trailer and Buzz so far

The trailer dropped in late July and immediately set the tone: it opens on a hopeful note, with Deol and Zinta’s characters celebrating independence, before the mood shifts hard once Partition is announced and the family is forced to flee. One widely shared moment shows Deol’s character being handed a sprawling haveli in Pakistan that once belonged to a Hindu family — a small but loaded detail that captures the film’s larger themes of displacement and loss.

A day before the trailer dropped, Sunny Deol also posted an emotional tribute to his mother on social media, dedicating the film to her and to “every mother in the world.”

The film’s first song, “Kahaan Chale Gaye Ho Ram,” has also been released and has reportedly moved audiences with its emotional weight, built around Shabana Azmi’s character.

Why it Matters

Partition dramas carry a special weight in Bollywood — they’re rare, they’re difficult to get right, and when they land, they tend to stay with audiences for years. With a director known for handling large emotional canvases, a composer like Rahman setting the tone musically, and a cast this experienced, Batwara 1947 has the ingredients to be one of the defining Bollywood releases of 2026.
