Prahaar: Rajkummar Rao Steps Into the Courtroom as Ujjwal Nikam – What to Know Before October 16

Not every gripping Hindi film needs a chase scene. Prahaar: The Untold Story of Ujjwal Nikam, arriving in cinemas on October 16, 2026, is betting that a courtroom, a case file and a determined lawyer can hold an audience just as firmly. With Rajkummar Rao in the lead and Maddock Films behind it, this is one of the more serious releases of the month, and it has just released a new song to keep the buzz going.

What the Film is About

Prahaar is a legal drama built around Ujjwal Nikam, the special public prosecutor known for his role in the legal proceedings that followed the 26/11 Mumbai attacks. The story centers on the trial of Ajmal Kasab, the lone surviving attacker, and, according to the film’s listing, also revisits the landmark criminal trials that came after the 1993 Bombay blasts. The focus is on the legal fight for justice and the person who carried it, rather than on the events themselves.

A Trailer That Leans on Evidence, Not Action

The trailer, released on September 30, sets the tone with its tagline: no guns, no bullets, only proof and truth. That line captures what the makers appear to be going for. Rao plays Nikam as a methodical, convicted advocate, and the footage is built around the courtroom and the pressure surrounding the trial rather than spectacle. For a subject this sensitive, that restraint reads as a deliberate and respectful choice.

The Cast

Rajkummar Rao leads as Nikam, and Wamiqa Gabbi plays his wife, Jyoti Nikam. It’s their second film together after Bhool Chuk Maaf, though the tone here couldn’t be more different. Lalit Prabhakar plays Ajmal Kasab, Jaideep Ahlawat appears as an ISI brigadier, and Ashish Vidyarthi plays a Bombay High Court judge. Sikandar Kher and Ritvik Sahore round out the supporting cast.

Behind the camera, the film is directed by Avinash Arun, who also handled the cinematography, and produced by Dinesh Vijan under the Maddock Films banner. The screenplay is by Sumit Roy. Principal photography began in October 2025, and Rao reportedly wrapped his portion in February 2026.

Even the Love Story Gets a Song

The film’s romantic track, “Tujh Mein Basi Meri Jaan,” has just been released. It reunites Shreya Ghoshal and Sonu Nigam, and the video shows Rao and Gabbi amid wedding festivities, giving the Nikams’ marriage an emotional anchor in a film that is otherwise heavily procedural. The soundtrack is composed by Vishal Mishra and Emiway Bantai, with lyrics by Amitabh Bhattacharya.

A Date That Has Already Moved Once

Fans who followed the film early may remember a different date. The teaser, released in June, promised a theatrical release on August 7, 2026. The film was later postponed and settled on October 16. That puts it in a crowded slot: the same Friday brings Nayyi Navelli and Ranabaali, among others, and Drishyam: The Conclusion will still be running in its third weekend. For a serious, performance-driven drama, word of mouth will matter more than opening-day numbers.

Why It’s Worth Watching

Rao has built a reputation for disappearing into real people, and this role asks him to carry a film on conviction and detail alone. If the trailer is any indication, Prahaar isn’t trying to dramatize tragedy for effect, it’s trying to honor the work of seeking accountability. Whether audiences turn out for a quieter, talk-heavy thriller on a busy release Friday is the open question.

The Takeaway

Prahaar: The Untold Story of Ujjwal Nikam releases in cinemas on October 16, 2026. If you like legal dramas and Rajkummar Rao’s more grounded work, it’s worth putting on your list. As always with release dates this close to a crowded weekend, check showtimes before you book.
