From Superhero to Villain: Gal Gadot’s Transformation in Disney’s “Snow White”

Disney’s long-awaited live-action remake introduces Wonder Woman star in her first major villainous role

Wonder Woman Trades her Lasso for a Poison Apple

In a fascinating career pivot, Gal Gadot is swapping her superhero tiara for a villain’s crown as she takes on the iconic role of the Evil Queen in Disney’s upcoming live-action remake of “Snow White.” Set to hit theaters on March 21, 2025 — just days from now — this reimagining of the 1937 animated classic marks a significant departure for the actress best known as DC’s Wonder Woman.

The transition from heroic Diana Prince to the menacing Evil Queen represents Gadot’s first major villainous role in her over two-decade acting career. While fans have grown accustomed to seeing her save the day, they’ll soon witness her plotting Snow White’s demise — a character transformation that has generated considerable buzz in the entertainment industry.

Behind Disney’s Most Anticipated Remake

Directed by Marc Webb (“The Amazing Spider-Man,” “(500) Days of Summer”), this adaptation promises to breathe new life into Disney’s first-ever animated feature film. The project has been in development since 2016, with filming primarily taking place in London from March to July 2022. Additional shoots were completed in June 2024 following industry-wide delays caused by the SAG-AFTRA strikes.

At 87 years, “Snow White” sets a record for the longest gap between an animated original and its live-action remake, surpassing the previous record held by “Pinocchio” (2022).

The film features new original songs by acclaimed songwriters Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, known for their work on “La La Land” and “The Greatest Showman” — suggesting that this version will retain the musical elements that made the original so beloved while adding contemporary flair.

A Fresh Take on the Classic Tale

While the story follows the familiar Brothers Grimm fairy tale of an orphaned princess fleeing her evil stepmother, Disney’s new adaptation introduces several modern elements:

  • Rachel Zegler stars as Snow White, becoming the first Latina actress to portray the character
  • Andrew Burnap plays Jonathan, a new character replacing the traditional Prince
  • Ansu Kabia appears as the Huntsman
  • The portrayal of the seven dwarfs has been reimagined for contemporary audiences

Webb has commented that “all good stories evolve over time,” indicating this version aims to resonate with today’s viewers while honoring the classic tale’s essence.

Controversy Meets Critical Acclaim

The road to release hasn’t been without bumps. The film has faced several pre-release controversies, including debates surrounding Zegler’s casting and her comments about the original film, which some interpreted as criticism of the classic. In an October 2024 Variety interview, Zegler clarified that her remarks were taken out of context.

Additionally, discussions about the portrayal of the seven dwarfs and Gadot’s public stances have fueled online discourse about the film.

Despite these controversies, early reviews have been surprisingly positive. First reactions from critics describe the remake as a “visual feast” and potentially one of Disney’s best live-action adaptations in years — promising news for fans eagerly awaiting its release.

What This Means for Gadot’s Career

For Gadot, the role represents a significant expansion of her acting range. After establishing herself as a heroic figure through multiple Wonder Woman appearances, portraying the Evil Queen allows her to explore the darker side of her dramatic capabilities.

This Disney project follows her voice work in “Ralph Breaks the Internet” (2018) and her lead role in Netflix’s “Heart of Stone” (2023), demonstrating her versatility across different studios and formats.
