Hayden Panettiere, Star of Heroes and Nashville, Dies at 36

Hayden Panettiere, the actress beloved for her roles in Heroes, Nashville, and the Scream franchise, has died at the age of 36. Her death was confirmed by her representative on Sunday, August 16.

The confirmation

In a statement shared with ABC News, Panettiere’s father, Skip Panettiere, said: “It is with profound sadness that we share the tragic passing of our beloved Hayden. She was an incredible light and a force of nature who brought immeasurable love and joy to all who knew her — and to the millions who watched her onscreen.” He asked for privacy as the family processes the loss.

Police in Greenville, South Carolina, said their preliminary investigation has not indicated any signs of foul play or suspicious circumstances. No cause of death has been released.

A career that began before she could walk

Panettiere’s time on screen began remarkably early — she appeared in her first commercial at just eleven months old, and went on to work in more than 50 commercials as a child. Her full-time acting career took off at age four, when she was cast as Sarah Roberts on the ABC soap opera One Life to Live, a role she held until 1997. She followed that with a run on Guiding Light, and lent her voice to Dot in Pixar’s A Bug’s Life, a role that made her the fifth-youngest nominee in Grammy Award history.

As a child actress, she also appeared in Remember the Titans alongside Denzel Washington, Racing Stripes, and Ice Princess, steadily building a career that would carry her into adulthood.

Heroes and Nashville

Panettiere’s breakout adult role came in 2006, when she was cast as Claire Bennet, a cheerleader with regenerative powers, in NBC’s Heroes. The show became a cultural phenomenon and made her a household name.

She went on to headline Nashville from 2012 to 2018, playing country singer Juliette Barnes opposite Connie Britton. The role earned her two Golden Globe nominations for Best Supporting Actress and, following Britton’s departure in the show’s fifth season, Panettiere stepped into the position of top-billed lead.

She later returned to the Scream franchise, reprising her role as Kirby Reed in 2023’s Scream VI, more than a decade after first playing the character in Scream 4.

Speaking openly about her struggles

In recent years, Panettiere had spoken candidly about postpartum depression, addiction, and trauma, describing a period of inpatient treatment and therapy as she worked to rebuild her life. Her death comes shortly after the release of her memoir, in which she wrote openly about those struggles alongside the grief of losing her younger brother, actor Jansen Panettiere, in 2023.

Colleagues and fans have described her willingness to speak about her mental health journey as a source of comfort to others facing similar struggles — a part of her legacy that extends well beyond her work on screen.

Survived by family

Panettiere is survived by her daughter, Kaya Evdokia, and her parents, Lesley Vogel and Skip Panettiere.

Our thoughts are with her family and loved ones during this difficult time.
