Jailer 2 Box Office: How Rajinikanth’s Sequel Became the Highest-Grossing Tamil Film Ever

Rajinikanth has broken a lot of records over the years, but Jailer 2 is setting a new one. In just 11 days in cinemas, Nelson’s action sequel has reportedly grossed about ₹710 crore worldwide, making it the first Tamil film to cross the ₹700 crore mark and, by most trade reports, the highest-grossing Tamil film of all time. Here’s how it got there, where the money is coming from, and why the story is more nuanced than the headline suggests.

The Headline Numbers

According to trade tracker Sacnilk, as reported by The Week, Jailer 2 has reached a worldwide gross of roughly ₹710.35 crore after its 11th day. The film is also set to enter the ₹400 crore club in India, which would make it only the third Tamil film to do so. In earlier updates, trackers put it at about ₹616 crore after eight days, so the pace has been fast. Hindustan Times has reported that it has entered the list of the top 20 highest-grossing Indian films of all time, ahead of Salaar and Sultan.

A Big Opening, a Strong Weekend and Steady Holds

The film opened on October 15 with a net of ₹59.70 crore in India on day one, according to Sacnilk. That’s about 23% higher than the original Jailer‘s opening of ₹48.35 crore in 2023. The following days looked like this:

  • Day 2: ₹37.10 crore
  • Day 3: ₹47.25 crore
  • Day 4 (Sunday): ₹55.85 crore
  • Day 9 (second Friday): ₹14.50 crore
  • Day 10 (second Saturday): ₹24.15 crore
  • Day 11 (second Sunday): ₹25.70 crore

The second weekend is the real story. A second-Friday figure of ₹14.50 crore, followed by gains on Saturday and Sunday, shows the film is still drawing audiences rather than relying on a front-loaded opening.

Where the Money Is Coming From

On Day 11, the film earned ₹25.70 crore net across 11,954 shows. Tamil shows brought in ₹17.35 crore, Telugu shows ₹4.50 crore and Hindi shows ₹3.15 crore. That means roughly two-thirds of that day’s net came from Tamil, about a sixth from Telugu and around one in eight from Hindi. This is one day’s split, so it shouldn’t be read as the final picture, but it shows how the film is powered by its home market and Telugu audiences more than by the Hindi belt.

Putting the Record in Context

A few things are worth keeping in mind before treating this as settled:

  • The 2.0 comparison. Jailer 2 is said to have passed Rajinikanth’s own 2.0 (2018), but that film’s lifetime gross is reported differently depending on the source, with some quoting a range of ₹700–800 crore. Whether Jailer 2 is “the highest-grossing Tamil film ever” depends on which figure you use, so it’s safest to say that most trade reports now put it at the top.
  • Not his biggest opening. Rajinikanth’s Coolie reportedly opened at ₹65 crore net, his biggest domestic opening to date, so Jailer 2‘s ₹59.70 crore is strong but not a record for the star.
  • Compared with the original. The first Jailer, released in 2023, reportedly grossed around ₹605–610 crore worldwide, so the sequel has already passed that mark comfortably.

Why It Worked

The studio and trade sources I found don’t explain the success in detail, so these are likely factors rather than confirmed reasons. The first film built a lot of goodwill with its action, music and Rajinikanth’s screen presence, and the sequel reunites that formula: director Nelson, the Sun Pictures banner and composer Anirudh. A brand name audiences already trust, plus a long festival-season window, is a powerful combination.

What It Says About the 2026 Box Office

Jailer 2 arrives in a year where the box office has been a mixed bag. Earlier in this series we looked at how smaller, sincere films like Hanuman Ansh outlasted star-led Hindi releases, and at how several new Hindi films opened weakly this month. Jailer 2 is a reminder that star power and franchise strength still work, when the film is built on a proven formula and released at the right time. It also underlines how much of the big money is now coming from regional-language films.

What to Watch Next

Watch for the domestic ₹400 crore mark, whether the worldwide figure keeps climbing as Ramayana approaches in early November, and how the Hindi version holds up against new releases. Box office numbers are revised daily, so treat today’s figures as a snapshot, not a final total.

The Takeaway

Eleven days in, Jailer 2 is already one of the biggest Indian releases of the year and a landmark for Tamil cinema. The headline record is impressive, and the real strength is in how well the film kept its audience after the opening weekend.
