Kajol Becomes Latest Victim of Deepfake Videos After Rashmika Mandanna and Katrina Kaif
The use of deepfake technology to create and spread misinformation has become a major concern, with Bollywood actors increasingly falling prey. After Rashmika Mandanna and Katrina Kaif, Kajol is the latest celebrity to have a deepfake video go viral.
Origins of the Kajol Deepfake Video
A manipulated video featuring Kajol changing clothes on camera has been spreading on social media. Fact-checking websites like BoomLive revealed that the original video belongs to English social media influencer Rosie Breen. She had posted the clip on TikTok in June as part of the “Get Ready With Me” trend.
Using artificial intelligence tools, Breen’s face was replaced with Kajol’s face in the edited video. For a brief moment, Breen’s original face is also visible in the altered clip. The deepfake made it appear as if Kajol was undressing on camera.

Deepfake Videos Raise Concerns
The Kajol deepfake video comes amid rising worries about the misuse of this technology. Earlier, similar manipulated videos and images involving Rashmika Mandanna and Katrina Kaif went viral.
A video showed Mandanna entering an elevator, but her face was replaced using deepfake tools. Many social media users and celebrities expressed outrage, calling it “extremely scary”. An FIR was registered by Delhi Police, leading to questioning of a 19-year-old suspect.
In Kaif’s case, a photoshopped image from her upcoming movie ‘Tiger 3’ surfaced online. Her original outfit was changed using deepfake techniques.
Measures Being Taken Against Deepfakes
Given the disruptive potential of deepfakes, authorities have taken note. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has acknowledged the threat deepfakes pose to society.
The Indian government also issued advisories urging social media platforms to promptly remove deepfake content spreading misinformation. Experts have called for social awareness and media literacy campaigns to help identify and curb deepfakes.

Concerns Over Misuse of Technology
While deepfake technology has innovative applications, its misuse to tarnish reputations and spread false narratives raises ethical concerns. As the Kajol incident shows, public figures and celebrities are particularly vulnerable to deepfakes.
With improved AI tools, deepfakes are becoming increasingly harder to detect. Many fear the proliferation of deepfakes can cause confusion and enable the spread of disinformation. There are calls for policy interventions and stricter regulations against abusive uses of deepfake creation tools.
The onus is also on citizens and the media to be more vigilant against manipulated content online. As deepfake videos become more pervasive, it is crucial we learn to identify misinformation and not allow technology to undermine truth.
