Rashmika Mandanna Speaks Out Against Disturbing Deepfake Video

A disturbing deepfake video featuring actress Rashmika Mandanna has gone viral, prompting the star and several authorities to call for urgent action. Mandanna expressed feeling “hurt” over the use of technology to misrepresent her identity without consent.

The video shows a woman’s face being digitally altered to resemble Mandanna as she enters an elevator. However, the original footage features British-Indian influencer Zara Patel, evidencing the falsified nature of the viral version.

Concerns Over Misuse of Technology

In a statement, Mandanna emphasized the “extremely scary” potential for technology like deepfakes to cause real harm. She worried about the impact such an incident could have had if it occurred when she was a student, lacking the support system she now has.

Mandanna called for society to address the issue urgently before more people fall victim to this form of identity theft enabled by advances in artificial intelligence. The actor tagged authorities including Cyberabad Police and Maharashtra Cyber, underscoring the need for a coordinated response.

Support from Colleagues and Authorities

Several of Mandanna’s colleagues in the entertainment industry also weighed in on the disturbing video. Veteran actor Amitabh Bachchan, who co-starred with Mandanna in her Bollywood debut Goodbye, deemed the deepfake a strong legal case necessitating action.

Union Minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar also echoed the urgent need for social media platforms to comply with regulations against misinformation like deepfakes. He outlined IT rules requiring prompt removal of false posts, reminding platforms of their legal obligations.

The Growing Threat of Deepfakes

While the motivations behind this disturbing video remain unclear, it highlights growing concerns over deepfake technology. Deepfakes use AI to manipulate photos or videos and deceptively portray events or speech that never occurred.

As deepfake detection expert Abhishek Kumar revealed, the seamless face-morphing transition in Mandanna’s video made it appear convincing to untrained eyes. But subtle inconsistencies gave away the falsified nature upon closer inspection.

As the technology behind deepfakes evolves, experts warn they will become increasingly difficult to detect. Hence the need for a timely policy response before this form of misinformation spreads further. Mandanna’s experience has brought renewed urgency to this complex issue.

A Violation of Trust and Safety

At the core, non-consensual deepfakes violate personal privacy and trust. As Mandanna emphasized, public figures may have access to resources for support. But deepfakes jeopardize the safety and reputations of private individuals even more.

But regulation alone may prove insufficient given the viral spread of content online. Many stress the need for better public awareness and skepticism to combat deepfakes’ potential to deceive. Grassroots campaigns by advocacy groups could complement top-down policy.

There are also ethical considerations around free speech and consent. As deepfakes evolve beyond just impersonation into art and comedy, regulations must walk a fine line. But lawmakers emphasize that fundamental privacy and safety protections remain paramount.
