Spider-Man: Brand New Day Just Broke Avengers: Endgame’s Box Office Record

There’s a new king of the box office, and he swings on webs.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day pulled in $360 million domestically over its opening weekend, officially overtaking Avengers: Endgame’s $357.1 million to become the biggest domestic opening in movie history. It’s a record that had stood since 2019, and one many in the industry assumed was untouchable.

By the Numbers

The film, directed by Destin Daniel Cretton and starring Tom Holland and Zendaya, opened across 4,487 North American theaters. Its $360 million domestic haul was paired with a $572 million international debut, pushing the worldwide opening weekend total to $932 million — the second-biggest global launch ever, trailing only Endgame’s $1.2 billion.

The film also posted the best single-day opening in history at $168 million, again edging out Endgame. It crossed the $1 billion mark globally within days of release, one of the fastest films ever to do so. Reviews have matched the box office energy: Brand New Day holds a 90% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes, a 98% audience score, and an A CinemaScore rating.

Brand New Day picks up after No Way Home, in which the world forgot Peter Parker ever existed. Holland’s Spider-Man is now fighting crime without the people who once knew him — including Zendaya’s MJ and Jacob Batalon’s Ned — while also grappling with newly unstable powers.

Disney’s CEO is Already Looking Ahead

The box office milestone didn’t go unnoticed at Disney, which produces the film through Marvel Studios even though Sony holds distribution rights. On the company’s quarterly earnings call this week, CEO Josh D’Amaro congratulated Sony, Marvel chief Kevin Feige, and the Marvel Studios team on the record-breaking weekend, calling it an “unbelievable result.”

D’Amaro went further, framing the win as a good omen for Marvel’s next major event film. He said the Spider-Man success “bodes well” for Avengers: Doomsday, the first Avengers film since 2019, arriving in theaters December 18.

It’s a notable moment of cross-studio goodwill — Disney and Sony have had a famously complicated relationship over Spider-Man’s film rights in the past — and it comes as D’Amaro also acknowledged that The Mandalorian and Grogu and Moana underperformed at the box office this year, even as he argued those titles still benefited the company in other ways.

What It Means for the Rest of 2026

Brand New Day’s run also introduced Sadie Sink as Jean Grey, folding X-Men characters into the story in a way that’s fueled speculation about how the mutants might factor into Avengers: Doomsday and its planned follow-up, Secret Wars. Neither Sink nor Holland has been officially confirmed for Doomsday’s cast, but the door is clearly open.

For now, the record stands: Spider-Man: Brand New Day is the biggest domestic opener in box office history, and Hollywood is treating it as proof that audiences still show up in force for the right theatrical event.
