Sydney Sweeney Tells Tom Cruise to “Watch Out” After Death-Defying Airplane Stunt
Sydney Sweeney just proved she’s got some Mission: Impossible energy of her own. The actress shared a video of herself strapped to the top of a moving biplane as it flipped upside down mid-flight — and directly called out Tom Cruise in the caption.
What happened
Sweeney posted the video to Instagram on Monday, August 24, showing herself secured to the top of a single-engine biplane, wearing a red safety vest and protective goggles, holding a GoPro camera in one hand. The plane performed a series of loops and rolls, at points sending her completely upside down mid-air.
She captioned the post simply: “watch out tom cruise.”
The stunt was hosted by the Wing Walk Company, which commented on her post: “You were brilliant….we LOVED having you!” Her photographer friend Eddy Chen added, “Thank gawd I didn’t go. Would have passed out.”

The Tom Cruise connection
The comparison wasn’t random. Sweeney’s stunt closely echoed Cruise’s own wing-walking sequence in 2025’s Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, where he performed a similar feat on an 80-year-old Stearman biplane, reaching speeds of around 140 mph at 8,000 feet.
That sequence was famously grueling to film. Longtime Mission: Impossible writer-director Christopher McQuarrie has described just how demanding it was for Cruise, explaining that the propeller wind hit him at speeds exceeding 100 mph, and that Cruise would sometimes lie down on the wing to rest between takes — with the team unable to tell if he was conscious unless he gave a specific hand signal to stop.
The official Top Gun Instagram account even got in on the fun, commenting on Sweeney’s post: “Feel the need for speed🔥👏✈️”
Not her first daredevil moment
This isn’t a one-off for Sweeney. Just weeks earlier, she shared footage from a trip to Australia and New Zealand with her boyfriend, music executive Scooter Braun, where the couple went bungee jumping, took a helicopter ride, and rode speedboats. She’s also previously posted kitesurfing videos, including at least one dramatic wipeout, showing a consistent pattern of chasing adrenaline in her downtime.
What’s next for Sweeney
Away from stunts, Sweeney has a packed slate ahead. She currently stars in The Housemaid alongside Amanda Seyfried, based on the novel by Freida McFadden, with a sequel already in development for a December 2027 release. She’s also set to star in The Custom of the Country, an upcoming tragicomedy directed by Josie Rourke, based on Edith Wharton’s classic 1913 novel.
For now, though, it’s her real-life stunt work — not her film work — that’s got fans and fellow celebrities buzzing, with actress Leslie Mann simply commenting on the post: “Be careful!! ❤️”
