Janhvi Kapoor’s Halloween Tribute to Sridevi’s Nagina Has Fans Calling It the Best Costume of the Year

Halloween usually means ghosts, witches and the occasional superhero. This year, Janhvi Kapoor went in a different direction: she recreated one of Hindi cinema’s most famous posters. On October 31, 2026, the actress shared a set of photos and videos paying homage to her late mother, Sridevi, as the shape-shifting snake from the 1986 fantasy film Nagina. The post collected more than 800,000 likes within about 14 hours.

The Recreation

Janhvi stepped into the role of Rajni, the ichchadhari naagin who made Sridevi a household name. She wore a bridal look with a maang tikka, a nose ring, bangles and a multi-layered silver necklace, and struck the character’s signature pose with both palms raised, just like on the original poster. The result is a close match for the film’s artwork, down to the bold, retro “Nagina” lettering.

A Full Cast for the Poster

She wasn’t alone. According to reports, social media personality Orry stepped into Rishi Kapoor’s role, and celebrity photographer Vaishnav Praveen played Amrish Puri’s villain, the menacing tantrik. The trio recreated the poster and several memorable scenes from the film, and the group styling is a big part of why the post felt more like a mini film shoot than a quick costume photo.

What She Said

Janhvi called it a tribute. In her caption, she said Halloween has become about dressing up as your favourite characters and pop-culture moments, sometimes spooky, sometimes funny, and sometimes a tribute. She then wrote: “who could possibly be more iconic than Mumma, Rishi uncle and Amrish sir!!” She also thanked her friends for helping with the “lewk.”

Her sister, Khushi Kapoor, responded with “You have won Halloween.” Khushi had her own Halloween look, dressing as Wonder Woman.

Why Nagina Still Matters

Directed by Harmesh Malhotra, Nagina follows Rajni, a shape-shifting snake who marries Rajiv, played by Rishi Kapoor, to avenge her spouse’s death at the hands of an evil saint. Amrish Puri played the villain, with Prem Chopra and Sushma Seth in supporting roles. The film is widely credited with establishing Sridevi as the biggest female star of the 1980s, and it remains one of her best-remembered performances.

A Different Kind of Halloween Trend

The tribute also shows how Halloween in India is evolving. Rather than copying Western horror or superhero costumes, celebrities are increasingly reaching for their own film heritage, and a poster recreation like this works because fans recognise the references instantly. It also lets the next generation pay homage to the screen icons who came before them, which is especially meaningful when the icon is a parent.

The Takeaway

Janhvi’s Halloween post is a warm, well-executed tribute rather than a gimmick. It honours Sridevi, brings back a classic film for a new audience, and gives fans a reason to revisit Nagina. If you’re looking for a costume idea for next year, this one sets a high bar.
