Cillian Murphy Mines New Territory with ‘Blood Runs Coal’

Fresh off his Oscar-winning turn as J. Robert Oppenheimer, Cillian Murphy is set to delve into the gritty world of coal mining unions with his upcoming project, ‘Blood Runs Coal.’ The film, based on the non-fiction book by Mark A. Bradley, promises to be a gripping period drama that sheds light on a dark chapter in American labor history.

The True Story Behind ‘Blood Runs Coal’

‘Blood Runs Coal’ is an adaptation of Bradley’s 2020 book, ‘Blood Runs Coal: The Yablonski Murders and the Battle for the United Mine Workers of America.’ The story centers around the 1969 murder of mining union organizer Joseph “Jock” Yablonski, his wife, and daughter, after Yablonski campaigned against a corrupt union leader. Their deaths sparked a lengthy investigation that unveiled the shady dealings within the coal industry and the powerful United Mine Workers of America (UMWA) union.

Cillian Murphy’s Role and Producing Efforts

Murphy, who recently won critical acclaim for his portrayal of the father of the atomic bomb in ‘Oppenheimer,’ will take on the role of Chip Yablonski, the son of the slain union activist. Chip, a labor attorney, dedicates himself to uncovering the truth behind his family’s tragic deaths and seeking justice for his father’s fight against corruption.

In addition to starring in the film, Murphy will also produce ‘Blood Runs Coal’ through his production company, Big Things Films, alongside Davis Entertainment’s John Davis and Jordan Davis. Mark A. Bradley, the author of the book, will serve as an executive producer, ensuring the project remains faithful to the harrowing true events.

The Butterworths’ expertise in crafting compelling narratives from real-life events bodes well for ‘Blood Runs Coal,’ which promises to be a powerful and authentic portrayal of the struggles within the mining industry and the sacrifices made by those fighting for workers’ rights.

Continuing a Non-Fiction Streak
