Veteran Telugu Actor Chandra Mohan Passes Away at 80

Veteran Telugu actor Chandra Mohan, best known for his versatile character roles, passed away on Saturday morning at the age of 80 due to age-related health issues.

The actor, whose original name was Mallampalli Chandrasekhar Rao, breathed his last around 9:45 AM at Apollo Hospital in Hyderabad where he was undergoing treatment. He is survived by his wife Jalandhara and two daughters.

Illustrious Career Spanning Over 5 Decades

Chandra Mohan made his acting debut in 1966 with the Telugu film ‘Rangula Ratnam’ and went on to star in over 900 films in a career spanning more than five decades.

Recognized for his impeccable acting skills, Chandra Mohan played the lead hero in over 150 films between the 1970s and 1980s despite his shorter stature compared to the leading men of that era. He starred alongside top heroines like Sridevi, Jayaprada and Jayasudha.

Some of his most memorable roles were in hit films like ‘Padaharella Vayasu’, ‘Siri Siri Muvva’, ‘Seethaamalakshmi’ and ‘Radha Kalyanam’. He also made a mark in character roles and negative parts in Telugu, Tamil and Hindi films.

Won Several Accolades Over the Years

Chandra Mohan won two Filmfare Awards South for Best Actor for his performances in ‘Siri Siri Muvva’ (1978) and ‘Seethakoka Chiluka’ (1981).

He also received the Raghupathi Venkaiah Award in 2011 for his contribution to Telugu cinema. The Andhra Pradesh government honored him with the Nandi Award for Best Actor multiple times.

Last Rites on Monday

The veteran actor’s last rites will be performed in Hyderabad on Monday. Several celebrities and co-stars expressed grief over the demise of the iconic actor on social media.

Junior NTR tweeted, “It is very sad to see the untimely death of Chandramohan Garu, who has earned special recognition for himself by playing different roles in films for many decades.”

Filmmaker Kona Venkat called him the lucky charm for many top actresses. “As he played husband in many films, he was hailed as a perfect middle-class husband on screen,” he stated.

The Telugu film industry has lost a versatile and beloved actor whose inimitable charm and talent will be deeply missed. Chandra Mohan’s legacy will live on through his rich body of work spanning over 200 films.
