Seven Years in the Making: Vijay Sethupathi and Thiagarajan Kumararaja Reunite for Pocket Novel
Some director-actor pairings earn enough goodwill from a single film that fans will wait years for the follow-up without complaint. Vijay Sethupathi and filmmaker Thiagarajan Kumararaja are a textbook example. Their last collaboration, the cult favorite Super Deluxe, released in 2019 and earned Sethupathi a National Award for Best Supporting Actor. Now, after a seven-year gap, the two are back together for Pocket Novel, and the wait appears to have been worth the anticipation building around it.
A Director Returning to the Chair After Years Away
Pocket Novel marks only Thiagarajan Kumararaja’s third feature as director, following Aaranya Kaandam in 2010 and Super Deluxe in 2019. That scarcity is part of what makes each of his projects feel like an event rather than a routine release. Kumararaja isn’t a filmmaker who works on a predictable annual schedule; he’s someone fans have learned to wait for, and this latest gap of seven years is the longest yet between his directorial outings.
Reuniting With Vijay Sethupathi, Adding Malavika Mohanan
Sethupathi returns as the film’s lead, stepping back into Kumararaja’s distinct storytelling world after their Super Deluxe success. Joining him is Malavika Mohanan in a central role, alongside Raj B Shetty, making his Tamil debut, and veteran actor Kishore in a supporting part. The combination of a proven lead actor-director pairing with fresh faces in key roles is a common Kumararaja approach, one that helped give Super Deluxe its distinctive ensemble energy.

A Team Built From Proven Collaborators
Behind the camera, Pocket Novel reunites much of the Super Deluxe technical team. Cinematographer Nirav Shah, who has worked with Kumararaja across multiple projects including Modern Love: Chennai, returns to shoot the film. Editor Sathyaraj Natarajan is also on board. Perhaps most notably, legendary composer Ilaiyaraaja is handling the music, a significant addition for a director known for using music as a storytelling device rather than simple background scoring.
What the Film Is About
Described as a crime novel-inspired fantasy drama, Pocket Novel has largely kept its plot details under wraps, in keeping with Kumararaja’s tendency to reveal very little before release. What is known is that production has unfolded across multiple shooting schedules, with a second schedule reportedly filmed in Chennai, said to reveal an entirely new layer of the story, a hint at the kind of layered, non-linear storytelling Kumararaja’s fans have come to expect from him.
The film is being made as a multilingual release, with versions planned in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, and Hindi, a sign of the ambitions behind the project beyond its regional roots.
Why the Wait Matters
Part of what makes Pocket Novel such a closely tracked release is precisely how rare Kumararaja’s output is. Directors who release a film every year or two build anticipation through frequency. Kumararaja has built his reputation almost in spite of long gaps between projects, with each new film arriving as a genuine event rather than another entry in a crowded release calendar. Pairing that scarcity with Sethupathi, one of Tamil cinema’s most consistently acclaimed actors, and a technical team carried over almost entirely from a film still fondly remembered years later, gives Pocket Novel a level of built-in goodwill few other 2026 releases can claim.
What Comes Next
With production underway across multiple shooting schedules and a wide multilingual release planned, Pocket Novel is shaping up to be one of the most closely watched Tamil films of the year. As plot details remain largely under wraps, expect anticipation to keep building the closer the film gets to a confirmed release date.
